MM: WHO are you?

JL: I am Jess Laufer and I am studying visual arts at QUT in Brisbane, although originally I’m from a small town in NSW called Murwillumbah.

WHAT the hell is your work about?

My work to me is a way of telling a story. I’ve never been very good with my words and I find it so much easier to express my thoughts and dreams on paper.

WHEN did you realise you were in tune with the right side of your brain?

It all started when I was obsessed with Pokémon (back when I was like 6 or 7 just to clarify…) I decided to try and draw one of my old school Pokémon cards, which turned out pretty darn neat. I remember showing my mum and she asked if I traced it. Of course she was probably just being a mum and trying to encourage me but hey, it worked!

WHERE do you draw inspiration from?

Everywhere. Trees, books, flowers, museums; just about anything. It just takes that one little glimpse of something that I would look at everyday in a different perspective that makes me see it in a whole new light.

WHY do you create?

I’m obsessed with coming up with new ideas and then somehow transferring them down on paper. I feel like I have been chosen to create. It’s just one of those things that makes you who you are; you’re either born with it or discover it later in life. For me, I think creating is an opportunity to find yourself and express it with out limitations or words.

HOW does the magic happen – creative process of candid creativity?

I don’t plan. Planning is boring. Usually I have an idea and I try to get it down onto paper and watch to see where this leads me. Planning leads to being predictable and I prefer to be adventurous.

Plans for 2013?

Get though my second year of uni, start a small online store, create a shit load of art. Oh, and hopefully get my name out there, but isn’t that what everyone wants? haha

So we can stay in the loop, what are your dot com(s)?
