MM: WHO are you?

RC: Ray Coffey

WHAT the hell is your work about?

Determinism. For everything that happens, there are conditions such that, given those conditions, nothing else could happen. So I basically look how people’s lives are shaped not by their own choices but by random events and accidents that occur without their control.

WHEN did you realise you were in tune with the right side of your brain?

From about the age of seven, other kids were always asking me to draw things for them in art class. I had a drawing hung on the wall at school and I remember another pupil accusing me of getting my father to draw the piece for me. I thought I must be doing this right.

WHERE do you draw inspiration from?

From people who look like they’ve lived a life.

WHY do you create?

I am an addict. I love art and I can’t and don’t want to do anything else.

HOW does the magic happen – creative process of candid creativity?

For the Homeless series that I am currently working on, each drawing takes approximately 80-100 hours.  I start off with line work using the grid method then slowly build up the form. It’s a long and slow process and at times can be a bit of a slog especially the early stages. I suffer from back and neck pain while working on these long pieces. The final stages are the most fun adding highlights with white charcoal. This final stage usually brings the drawing alive.

Plans for 2013?

To seek gallery representation here in Australia and internationally.

So we can stay in the loop, what’s your dot com(s)?
