FOR some, the 2001 comedy film Zoolander is a movie mocking the lifestyle of male models. For others, such as myself, Zoolander has become a cult classic, and Ben Stiller’s character, Derek Zoolander, has become a somewhat messiah among men.

On the surface, Zoolander has a silly premise – male models being brainwashed into conducting political assassinations. However, over the years, it has become a well-loved movie with quotable quotes and pioneering Blue Steel, which is colloquially known as ‘Duck Face’.

Even with the silly and unrealistic plotline, Zoolander has many underlying themes and life stories such as family, self-identity, and overcoming your inability to turn left. Though there is plenty to learn from watching Zoolander, we’ve chosen five life lessons from the film to take with you when you build your own school for kids who can’t read good and want to do other stuff too:

Your friends are always there for you

The denim trend comes and goes, but friends are forever. Remember, your friends are always there to support you, even if you’re in regular competition with them. They’ll be there with an Orange Mocha Frappuccino when times are tough. You can then progress to driving around a jeep blasting “Wake Me Up Before We Go Go” by Wham.

Always stand up for yourself

Sometimes the world might be against you and it can get tough. Remember to stand your ground and show them who’s boss. If they tell you to lick their balls, remind them you can lick your own (this is metaphoric. Kudos to you if you literally can, though).

Everyone questions themselves

Life is all about self-discovery no matter what age you are. Sometimes you just need to step back and question if you’re doing what you love, even if it’s asking your reflection in a puddle on the road.

Life is more than being really ridiculously good-looking

In the age of the selfies, sometimes people get too self-absorbed with their personal image. Just remember that life is not about the amount of likes on your Instagram selfie, it’s about helping people… that need help. Make the world a better place, okay?

Don’t light up during a gasoline fight

Actually, don’t have a gasoline fight at a petrol station, period.

If you haven’t watched Zoolander, or in need of a refresher, you need to drop everything and watch it now.
