MM: WHO are you?

DF: Hi I’m Dana! I’m an Aquarius, guess you could say I have a bubbly personality and I like cats. Wait no that’s not right, let me start again. I’m Dana Ferris and I’m a digital illustrator, which means all my artwork is done on the computer using Photoshop CS6 and a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet.

WHAT is your work about?

Most of the time there’s a story behind the artwork, when I work I don’t always focus all of my attention to drawing so while one part of my brain is creating, the other half will make up a story that goes along with the art. What I like about this is that it can give my artwork a storybook feel, but without any written words it gives the viewer a chance to create their own story with the art. Other times it literally is just a pretty picture because sometimes I just like creating pretty things.

WHEN did you realise you were in tune with the right side of your brain?

I’ve always made stories up in my brain, ever since I was a kid. So in a way, I’ve always been creative but I only started drawing when I was 12. One night after school I was looking through the book club catalogue and saw these cool anime style characters and decided to draw them. The drawing turned out pretty good and after that I kept drawing, the whole thing was rather bizarre because prior that night I did hardly any drawing and if I did, it was a stick figure.

WHERE do you draw inspiration from?

Other artworks mainly, if I see a pose or colour palette I like then I want to try it for myself. Music also plays a big factor as I listen to it while I work, and I’ve had times where an artwork has come from being inspired by a song.

WHY do you create?

I get sad if I don’t create. Also bored. I get very bored. But aside from that, I guess it’s like exercise for my brain. I need to do it to stay mentally healthy and if I don’t then things go down hill.

HOW does the magic happen – creative process or candid creativity?

Definitely a creative process; I’m terrible at sketching for the sake of sketching. There needs to be a defined idea in my brain before I want to put pencil to paper (or stylus pen to wacom in my case), it’s just always been that way. For a while I thought it made me a terrible artist but now I’m ok with.

Plans for 2014?

To expand my art! I’m currently working on the idea of selling prints and jewellery at market stalls and online. As well as turning my art into a full time career instead of having to support myself with a second job.

So we can stay in the loop, what’s your dot com(s)?
