PARIS Men’s Fashion Week made it clear that the use of colour and unconventional shapes are back for guys in the upcoming season. Among the standouts so far have been Comme Des Garcons, Henrik Vibskov and Thom Brown, to name a few. They have managed to create collections that continue to move the spectrum of menswear in a totally new direction. For the fashion conscious man, such an event is one of a few chances per year (bar London Collections) to explore a multitude of new styles aside from the dappered three-piece suiting or casual wear we are geared to be content with.

Comme Des Garcons made full use of the colour rainbow and blocking as well as providing us with twists on the classic button up. Notice also how the models were sent out without checking the status of their dandruff. Edgy stuff.

Danish designer, Henrik Vibskov made no hesitation to cross lines of gender-specific clothing with more androgynous pieces. I quite enjoyed the blown up tops and overall innovation to make quite wearable pieces that still stood out in the realm of menswear. The collection was probably made most complete in uniformity with a singular a headpiece resembling the likes of a military bearskin hat.

Jean-Paul Gaultier dabbled with gender bending, utilising a long, skinny silhouette. Mention must be made of the sequinned clogs worn by the models and that one backless shirt giving a bit of edge and intrigue to the collection. While there appears to be no flowing theme throughout the entire set, at times it closely resembled a gladiator style aesthetic of which the designer had taken his inspiration from. 10/10 execution for this one.

Thom Browne must take the prize home for the most unconventional shapes and construction at his most intriguing of presentations. At times it’s hard to know exactly what you’re looking let alone the real life practicability of such creations but in the end that’s perhaps what does provide for a refreshingly entertaining show. To the fashion-oblivious though, this is the kind of exhibition that makes you question what the meaning of fashion is.

Finally, eccentric sportswear makes an appearance in the youthful form of the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection. Drawn from the popular trend of sports luxe, it incorporates the prints, socks and sandal pairings and slip on loafers. No doubt we can expect to see more of this come New York’s turn to host the fashion world.
