WHO are you?

My name is Mulga, actually it’s really Joel Moore but when I draw pictures I say Mulga did them, I like to be tricky like that. There is this actor in Hollywood with the same name as me, even the middle name, Joel David Moore, you may have seen him in Avatar and Dodgeball. I live in the south of Sydney with my wife and small children. I like to eat donuts.

WHAT is your work about?
It is about fun and making people smile and characters and beards and animals and humour and storytelling. I write a poem or story for most every art work I make. You could say my art brings to life a world where tropical bearded men run rampant, lions smoke tobacco pipes, tigers wear diamond sunglasses and gorillas rule the world like some kind of funky planet of the apes.

WHEN did you realise you were in tune with the right side of your brain?

When I was in high school I was popular in art class. That could have been the time. I like to try and use both sides of my brain equally, I get better results that way.

WHERE do you draw inspiration from?
Characters and unique individuals are cool. I love patterns and lines and colours so seeing that in the world around me is inspirational. Adventure time is pretty amazing too. The art and characters and ideas are amazing.

WHY do you create?
Because it is fun to do and I like the idea of creating something out of nothing. There is a blank wall at the start and then at the end of the creating there is a crazy bearded dude in flouro colours looking back at you.
I also create to make a living so no creating eventually equals no food.

HOW does the magic happen – creative process or candid creativity?
It differs for each artwork. Just the other night I was commissioned to paint an artwork live at a Berlin nightlife inspired party so I thought “What would a good image be for this event?”

I thought of a gorilla wearing headphones because gorillas are awesome and hairy and I love to paint them and headphones because he is a DJ gorilla. I thought it would be great to paint in flouro paint and have UV light shining on it. So that is what we did. I sketched out the gorilla at home and when I arrived at the venue I sketched it out on the canvas and then I painted it.

Plans for 2015?
I’m excited to be painting at Splendour in the Grass and hosting my market stall in July 2015.
I’ll also be working hard on finishing the children’s book I am writing.
I’ll also be releasing a colouring book hopefully before Christmas. I’m pretty pumped!
