Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival 2015

LAST weekend, I road-tripped (if you can call it that) with my family to the Sunshine Coast for the annual Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival. Hosted at the Events Centre in the heart of Caloundra, I was privileged to be a part of what would be an incredible experience. I and the other members of the makeup team (or Mineral Goddesses, as our leader calls us) put our skill to action, working the fastest we had ever worked while maintaining absolute perfection with every brush stroke. Our team was headed up by Kylie Eustace, ABIA Makeup Artist of the Year Nominee and owner of her own brand of cosmetics, Kylie’s Professional.

Throughout the late afternoon a large portion of the show featured stunning swimwear in time for summer, with bold sequin and pattern work adding glam to an otherwise casual and typical Australian style. Some of the featured swimwear designers included Surfher, Kanaloa, Opera and Blossom Betty.

The ready-to-wear sets were stunning; everything from dazzling bohemian Kaftans to radiant, feminine couture. Hatha Clothing, Kur, Sharka Bosakova and Eugenie Zhan were among the couture designers presented in the early evening.

You wouldn’t know it from the calm of the catwalk, but backstage was a bustling jungle for the most part (and yet so much fun!), we had very little light to work with, and had to side-step with the models to do any makeup touch ups as they sprinted from the dressing rooms to grace the stage again. Fashion certainly is a marathon of hard work, with so many elements and roles contributing to one marvellous show of talent, creativity and celebration. But seeing all of these parts come together made me believe even more fully in Australia’s ability to prove to the world it can be a top player when it comes to fashion.

The two highlights of my time were getting to meet Kylie, and having the chance to watch her incredible makeup skills in action – no wonder she’s been nominated for Makeup Artist of the Year in Australia! And second, getting to meet our celebrity guest, Madeline Stuart; awarded Model of the Year, she had just come back from modelling in New York Fashion Week, where she took the fashion world by storm and proved she wasn’t shy to overcome any obstacle to achieve her dreams. She has also recently been nominated for Australian of the Year, and after getting to meet her (although briefly; she’s a busy lady and takes her work seriously) I can definitely affirm what an inspiration she is.
