LÉONARD Combier is a 25-year-old French painter and illustrator living in Paris. He started drawing by himself when he was a child and never stopped…

This amazing artist works mainly with ink on paper, acrylic paint and Posca’s on canvas. His pieces are extremely detailed, which incorporate a lot of small and weird tribal characters, sexual references, hidden messages, irreverent quotes and funny situations.

“Combier’s’ pieces at first, seem like a big clutter, but as you look closer you start to progressively explore the artwork, going beyond the obvious foreground to discover an infinity of hidden details dispersed.

“The first thing I want when someone sees my drawing is to catch is attention, so that he comes closer to the drawing and starts to see all the hidden details. I want the spectator to dive into my world to discover all the links between the characters of the drawing and the dark humour inside. I never want him to be disappointed when he comes closer, I always want to show something new to discover, even if you stay a long long time in front of the painting.”

Using mainly acrylic and Posca for coloured canvases and black ink for black and white drawings, “Combier’ explains that when he begins, he often finds himself not even knowing what he will draw after three seconds. Never having a particular source of inspiration, he labels himself “art brut”, which refers to art made by people who never had an artistic education, who often make incredible pieces.

A unique, up and coming artist would be the best way to describe “Combier’, leaving us to muse in his artwork he says; “My goal here is to amuse the spectator and to take him into my world. I want to make out of each artwork a maze, in which ones like to wander and discover all the nooks and crannies”.
