Words by Jo McTavish
AS an advocate for film, I am nearly at terms with the non-existent term “original” within an industry full of sequels, remakes, adaptions and the comic book genre. Don’t get me wrong I love all of these genres but sometimes it is refreshing to see something so unheard it just has to be original and I think this month we might just have that…
Swiss Army Man marks the feature film debut of acclaimed music video directors Daniel Sheinert and Daniel Kwan, collectively known as DANIELS. Their visionary style has sparked a unique creation that goes back and forth between the absurd, the whimsical and the emotional.
The gonzo buddy comedy follows Hank (Paul Dano) who is stranded on a deserted island, having given up all hope of ever making it home again. But one day everything changes when a corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) washes up on shore; the two become fast friends, and ultimately go on an epic adventure that will bring Hank back to the woman of his dreams.
There are many great factors that contribute to why you should see this film. The first being its recognition at acclaimed festival’s such as Sundance, Sydney, Revelation Perth and New Zealand International Film Festival. Then there are the metric and audience ratings online, which are well above average but the most intriguing is simple, the trailer!
I cannot say I have seen such a bizarre concept ever, and if had it was a very long time ago. Not only does “Radcliffe’ and “Dano’ look incredible, the cinematographer and art directions screams all kinds of indie perfection, the musical element and humour is very fitting too.
Sometimes stories like this are not for everyone but the ones we often remember is when we choose to take a risk, feel uncomfortable and let the alternative part inside enjoy.
