Days Gone is a game released in 2019 for PlayStation 4 that received a lot of negative feedback from players and critics. This was a result of the game's multiple performance issues upon release. And now, four years later, the game has found itself in the spotlight again, gaining a decent number of fans. After HBO's superb adaptation of The Last of Us, it's no surprise that people want to delve into another well-told zombie story. And with Days Gone winning Best Story at the Golden Joystick Awards, it certainly didn't disappoint on that front. Fans of the game now say that it is one of the best zombie games around. Are they wrong?

Did Days Gone deserve the criticism it received?

Given the reception given to the video game upon its initial release and the reasons for the criticism, it is difficult to conclude that it was deserved. The game certainly had its flaws, but it didn't need to be harshly criticized. It is true that it was released at the same time as Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War and The Last of Us Part II, quite impressive games. However, the problem arose when this title from Bend Studio was compared to other high-end PS titles. While the game is good in its own right, comparing it to much higher-rated titles will result in exactly that.

However, when looking at the title individually, it certainly deserved a better rating than the 71 Metacritic scores it received. While the user rating is 8.4, the game deserves a Metacritic rating at least above 80. So, to answer the question: no, Days Gone did not deserve the harsh criticism. Yes, some criticism was justified, but that only goes so far.

What do Days Gone fans think of the game?

The game has gained a considerable number of fans since its release in 2019. Many of these loyal fans have praised the game for its excellent zombie mechanics, calling it the best they have seen in years. Another aspect of the game that was praised was its side quests, in addition to its binge-ability. Overall, many fans have expressed incomprehension at the harsh criticism the game has received, despite it being one of the best they have played in recent years. More specifically, the frustration stemmed from the fact that Sony wasn't going to greenlight a sequel to Days Gone. With over 12,000 votes, it appears that a large number of people agree with this complaint. Unfortunately, even with a petition, Sony still hasn't been convinced to create a sequel for the game. Some even believe that the game's decline in popularity is largely due to John Garvin.

The GAMINGBible explains that Garvin, the game director, discouraged many players with his harsh comments. Garvin initially said the game failed because critics were too “woke.” Then he dug his grave even further by accusing fans of not following through with the game. John explains that fans bought the game when it was on sale, months after its release. Somehow this man concluded that it was smarter to point fingers instead of trying to build a community for the game.
