Everyone has been talking about the latest developments at Warner Bros. Discovery last year. Of course, there has been a lot of sad news regarding cancellations. But there was also some good news, like the appointment of new DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The announcement was made at the end of October, and since November 1, they have been officially installed in their positions.
Together, the co-presidents are responsible for reshaping the DC Universe, directing all adaptations that will take place at the studio. They are also responsible for developing a plan for the franchise for the next 10-plus years, ensuring that it is more consistent than ever moving forward.
Gunn will always be the director
James Gunn is many people's favorite director, especially after the huge new energy he brought to the DCEU with The Suicide Squad and the first season of Peacemaker. Some of us may be worried that we won't see more of Gunn's great work because he may be too busy overseeing everything at DC Studios, but fear not. Gunn has hinted that he will continue to write and direct. However, he might only work on DC projects in the future.
He even has a few projects in the works, like finalizing Guardians of the Galaxy, which could be his last Marvel project? He's also working on the second season of Peacemaker and has hinted at another spinoff that will focus on Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, Suicide Squad's “The Wall.”
The new DCU will be connected to all platforms
During a Twitter interaction yesterday, James Gunn answered a few questions from fans asking for confirmation on the upcoming DC animated films. Will they be included in the DC canon? Will the DCU canon extend to TV series? And will there be more standalone films like Harley Quinn?
As we all know, Gunn loves to chat on Twitter with all his fans and share whatever he can with them. So he responded that some will be incorporated into the DC canon, and others will remain standalone films. He also gave insight into the direction DC will take, the interconnected nature of the universe, and the platforms they will use to bring it all to life.
When asked if he and Safran planned to create more canon TV series about DC characters, James Gunn said “without a doubt” and that they wanted to connect the DC universe through the films and television series, and that animation was part of it.
Another Twitter user asked if there were any plans to bring the DC games into canon, and James Gunn replied “yes.”
Finally, a fan asked if DC Studios was involved in the comics side of DC, to which Gunn responded via Twitter: “Very open communication. As everyone knows, I'm a huge comic book fan and hope that everything we do gets more people to read @DCComics (and vice versa). But Peter & I aren't in charge of comics – just all filmed DC entertainment.
Let's say James Gunn manages to combine films, television series, animation and games to create an incredibly cohesive DC universe. They could really take over the superhero genre.
