MM: WHO ARE YOU?
CN: I am a Melbourne based graphic designer and an emerging illustrator. When I am not working, you will find me eating or cycling.

WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR WORK ABOUT?
I would describe my work as whimsical and colourful. I want my illustration to make people happy, provide a room for the viewer to come up with a story themselves, and perhaps to be reminded of the many things in life to appreciate.

WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOU WERE IN TUNE WITH THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR BRAIN?
Growing up in Hong Kong, drawing was always part of my life. At that time it was just a hobby, I never imagined I could take it to another level and it would turn into my profession. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a kindergarden teacher because I thought what babies do all day is sleep. Then when I got older, I wanted to be a painter, but I was told it wasn’t a career option. As a disappointed teen, I started to think about other career options and I came across graphic design. It was really a leap of faith because I had no idea what it was nor knowing how to use Adobe software back then. Thankfully my parents saw what was in me and they were very supportive for me to move to Melbourne to study. With a lot of hard work, I completed a Bachelor of Communication Design (Hons). After graduated, I started to work as a graphic designer and started a few self-initated illustration projects on the side. I put my work on internet, sent my folio around, entered competitions, and then things started rolling like a snowball – I received positive feedback, recognition, invitations to group exhibitions and commissions from people – and that was when I came to realisation that I should really take illustration seriously and pursue it further.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
Most of my inspiration derive from what I consider normal day-to-day life. I don’t necessarily look for things about graphic design, but anything with images or even a simple story, a pun, and an experience that could inspire me. I rarely watch television, but I spent a lot of time browsing through blogs, social media, and TED. I like gifs. I like exhibitions. I like picture books. I like observing human behaviors. I like to cruise around on my bicycle to dig out interesting stores, markets and cafes. Melbourne has been incredibly exciting, surprising, and inspiring place to live so far.

WHY DO YOU CREATE?
It gives me a sense of existence.

HOW DOES THE MAGIC HAPPEN (CREATIVE PROCESS OF CANDID CREATIVITY)?
I often come up with ideas best when I am not in front of the computer. I will first read the brief and set realistic deadlines. I will write down words that popped out of my head, absorb information and visuals that inspire me, step back, and do something else. After that, I will grab a paper or a sketchbook to capture some rough ideas and then draw again until I have something I am happy with. Once a solid idea emerges, I will plan how I would implement the concept. I try not to relay on the computer too much when creating my artwork, so whenever I use my computer it is mainly for researching and creating the final outcome, which is the part involves a bit of digital wizardry.

PLANS FOR 2014?
I am always open to discuss any collaboration opportunities with like-mined people, [whether] it is a mural project, a cook book idea or anything that inspires me! At this moment I have several things on my plate; working on a children’s book project with a friend; preparing some artworks for two group exhibitions; illustrating some commission works for a few clients. It will be an exciting year full of new works, so stay tuned!

SO WE CAN STAY IN THE LOOP, WHAT’S YOUR DOT COM(S)?
